Girls Excel in Math (GEM)
Girls Excel in Math (GEM) At A Glance
To create a community of girls passionate and excited about mathematics and science.
In 2010-2011, 262 students participated in GEM, led by 23 teachers. Groups came from 19 different schools in 10 districts, including two charter schools and two private schools. As in previous years, about 26% of the identified students being from underrepresented minorities.
For the past six years CEE has sponsored Girls Excel in Math (GEM), a Twin Cities program to establish and support a community of 4th-7th grade Twin Cities girls who are passionate about math.
We know that spending time with other girls who enjoy challenging math activities reinforces a girl's own pleasure in and enthusiasm for the subject. To this end, GEM will recruit dedicated teachers from different metro-area Public School Districts who will in turn recruit girls from their classes or their school. In this way, a teacher and a group of girls can continue working together between and after program events. Forming lasting friendships and a strong student-mentor bond with a teacher are important goals for the GEM program.
